Days To Germination: 10-14
Planting Depth: 1/4 inch
Spacing, Plant: 10-12 inches
Plant Height: 24 inches
Light: Mostly Sunny Or Partial Shade
SOWING: Plant in a mostly sunny or partly shady location. Sow seeds in place, in permanent location, covering seed with 1/4 inch fine soil. Plants may bloom and form pods if started in early spring. Can also be started in mid to late summer for blooms the following year.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: When seedlings are about 3 inches tall, thin to about a foot apart.
SUGGESTIONS: Plants thrive with neglect in average garden soil. Cut stems of plants as soon as seed pods start to turn brown. Strip leaves from plants and hang small bunches of plants upside down in a dry, shady spot. You may also need to carefully rub off outside of pod to reveal the silvery center.
LUNARIA (Money Plant)
Biennis Mixture
Lunaria biennis
BIENNIAL. Lunaria, also known as Honesty or Money Plant, is well known for it's flat silvery white seed pods that are reminiscent of coins when dried. Widely used in dried flower arrangements, and attractively striking in the garden. Once the seed pods have matured and dried on the plant, the outer white casing can be rubbed away to reveal silvery discs resembling silver coins. Dried plants are highly valued as winter bouquets. Use for borders or beds.
A 2- to 3-foot high, erect plant with heart-shaped leaves and wonderfully fragrant 1/2 inch purple and white flowers, appearing in clusters from spring to late summer. The clusters of sweet-scented purple and white blossoms slowly transform into the round or oval 1-inch seed pods in late summer or early fall, and last all winter.
Biennial - no blooms the first summer, but the plant will return and produce purple and white flowers the second summer. This is a biennial that acts like a perennial once it's established because it generally multiplies in the garden by sowing its own seeds, often coming up year after year without further care.
Lunaria grows well in Zones 5-10. (Winter hardy to Zone 5.) Prefers full sun and well-drained soil, however it can tolerate poor soil, partial shade and drought. Easily grown.
