SOWING: Plant in a sunny location with well drained soil.  Plant seed directly outdoors in early spring. Cultivate soil, mix seeds with a cup of sand and broadcast lightly over planting area. Lightly rake into soil or cover with light soil to a depth of 1/8 inch. Can be sown in  Fall in mild winter areas.

THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: When seedlings are 2 to 3 inches high, thin to 12 to 24 inches apart. Replant thinned plants.

GERMINATION: 30 days, depending upon soil and weather conditions.

SUGGESTIONS: For earliest bloom, start in a sunny window 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting outdoors. May be direct-seeded outside. Keep plants moderately moist.
Cut the flower stalks after the first bloom to encourage formation of a second spike.

Perennial - (Permanent plant). Spectacular spikes of red and white with dense pea-like flowers. Colorful spike flowers stand out above attractive cut-leaf foliage. Bright, richly-colored flowers are especially nice background plants in borders and for massing. Adapts to most soil types. 1 inch blooms open from top to bottom. Blooms from Spring to Summer. The flowers are good for cutting and attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
