SOW: For the finest onions, seed directly outdoors in full sun and well drained soil. Planting depth 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Space rows 12 inches apart. Scatter seed in the row at the rate of 3 seeds per inch.
START INDOORS: Seed can be started indoors 8-10 weeks before transplanting outdoors. When transplanting, clip plants to three inches and plant 2 inches deep
THIN: When seedlings are 3 inches high, thin to stand 2 to 3 inches apart.
Suggestions: Fertile, moist soil enriched with compost is best for onion production. Onions ward off many insect pests around lettuce, cabbage and carrots. Use thinnings as green onions.

America's traditional hamburger onion - one slice is all you need. 3 to 4 inch globe with dark red skin and crisp white rings, sweet flavor, very mild. Short day variety. Good for fresh use but does not store well. Good Pink Root tolerance. Delicious fresh in salads and sandwiches. Onions from seed are generally better quality than set-grown onions.
