SOWING:  Cool season crop. Start seed indoors or in greenhouse in early spring (5-7 weeks before planting outdoors). Or plant directly outdoors in mid spring or early summer. Sow 2-3 seeds together every 18 inches. Planting depth 1/8 inch.  Time crop so heads mature in cool weather.

THINNING: When seedlings are 1 inch tall thin to one plant every 18 inches.

SECOND CROP: In southern climates, sow again in the fall for a late crop. Time crop so heads mature in cool weather.

SUGGESTIONS: Plant cabbage in a sunny location where no cabbage was grown the year before. Cabbage prefer rich soil and regular watering.

Brassica oleracea var. capitata

A slow bolting, vigorous, early cabbage with 5 to 6 inch round head. Mild flavor. Yellows resistant. Fine, early round-headed type that yields 3-1/2-pound heads on stocky stems. Good all-around variety. Approximately 65 days till maturity from transplant.
Cabbage is popular as a crunchy salad, cooked vegetable, or tangy sauerkraut. A great source of vitamin C and potassium. Cabbage family members are good cancer fighting plants as shown by medical research. You can easily grow and pick delicious, succulent cabbage for many weeks to come by planting several types with different maturity dates. An easy to store vegetable.
