SOWING: Plant seeds outdoors mid-spring to midsummer. Rich, fertile soil preferred. Cover seeds with ¼ inch fine soil. Seed 2 to 4 inches apart. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
THINNING: When seedlings are 2 inches high, thin to 6 to 8 inches apart.
SPACING: Leave 12 to 18 inches between rows.
SUGGESTIONS: Best used as a fall crop for winter storage. Seed 3 to 3 1/2 months before first fall frost. When roots are full-grown, pull them, cut off tops within 1 inch of crown and store. Will keep until late spring. Water regularly during summer.

A favorite for years. American Purple Top's purplish crown gives way to creamy-yellow, fine-grained flesh with a sweet flavor. Sweet, fine-grained yellow flesh cooks bright orange. Large 5-6", globe-shaped roots are nearly round. Harvest in 90 days. Boil and serve with butter, lemon juice and parsley. Mash alone, or with potatoes, sour cream, parsley and nutmeg.
