SOW about 6 seeds per foot directly into the garden as soon as soil can be worked in early spring through mid spring.  (SOW beginning Spring, on into mid-summer, and if the winter is  mild, can be planted into the Fall.) Cover seeds with 1/2 inch of fine soil.

THIN: When seedlings are 3 to 4 inches high thin to 8 to 12 inches apart.

HARVEST: Start cutting outer leaves when plants are about 8 inches tall for extended harvest, new leaves will grow out from the center.   Use leaves from young thinned plants in salads.

SUGGESTIONS: Plants grow best in relatively moist fertile soil. Grow during the cooler part of the growing season. Plant in late summer for fall crop.

Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla

Dark reddish-green, glossy, heavily crinkled leaves, beautiful crimson stalks and veins. Easy to grow. Eat it like spinach or beet greens. SOW beginning Spring, on into mid-summer, and if the winter is mild, can be planted into the Fall. Pick from late spring till winter. Wide adaptability. Grows best in full sun, tolerates partial shade. Can be grown in containers, borders or the vegetable garden.
