SOWING: Start seed early indoors or seed directly outdoors from early to mid spring. Sow again in late summer for fall crop. Cover with 1/8 to 1/4 inch fine soil.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: When seedling plants are established, thin to 10 or 12 inches apart. Replant thinned seedlings. Seedlings started indoors can be planted outside after hardening off and danger of severe frost has passed.
SUGGESTIONS: Well-fertilized soil produces quickly-grown, crisp lettuce. Keep moderately moist. Sow seeds every 2 weeks from March to August for continued harvest. Lettuce grows best during the cooler part of the growing season.
