SOWING: Seed directly in the garden in a sunny location after all danger of frost has passed. Sow seeds ½-1 inch deep . Space rows approximately 18 inches apart. Seed may be started indoors 8 weeks prior to planting outdoors. Can be sown in late August for harvesting the next summer in mild climates.
GERMINATION: 10-14 days, depending upon soil and weather conditions.
THINNING & TRANSPLANTING: When seedlings are 3 inches high, thin/transplant to 18 inches apart. Replant thinned plants.
HARVEST: When onions have begun to develop skins and tops are falling over. Pull and sun-cure for a week before removing tops.
SUGGESTIONS: For early fruiting and to overcome a short growing season, seedlings may be started indoors. Fertile, moist soil enriched with compost is best for onion production. Onions ward off many insect pests around lettuce, cabbage and carrots. Use thinnings as green onions. Harvest young plants in 50-55 days or mature bulbs in 100 days.
